Karlie Norrish McChesney

Numbers, measuring, arithmetic, and formulas are the foundational tools of Karlie Norrish McChesney’s multi media art. Right out of high school Karlie worked as a draftsperson in an architectural engineering firm before pursuing her BEd and MEd in Studio Art Practices. Retired from her 30-year teaching career she now purses the arts fulltime. Karlie works in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional formats. Her creativity often expresses a fusion of mathematical ideas. Karlie’s studio is in Chilliwack, British Columbia; she exhibits her work locally in the province of British Columbia and across Canada.

Containers figure prominently in my work as they represent the confinement and restrictions placed upon all of us by society, something I feel pressure to conform to.

Spiro C -8 - Karlie McChesney

Spirograph is a geometric drawing device. It produces mathematical curves known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. As a child I loved drawing with my Spirograph set, it thoroughly fascinated me. The limitless symmetrical designs that could be created were formed mysteriously as the plastic numbered disks whirled around the page. The pen markings have been replaced by stitched threads in random and orderly patterns to mimic Spirographics.

Tie It Up - Karlie McChesney

A business man would have a large selection of silk ties to accompany his shirt and suit for each day of work. They could range from conservative prints to loud colours or be novelty images to celebrate a holiday. A man retired would have an abundance of these in his closet.

MO24 - Karlie McChesney

Incredibly a single piece of 2 dimensional flat paper when folded can form a 3 dimensional origami shape. Additionally when multiple papers are folded and joined together they become a modular origami – in this sample I utilized 24 papers to form a pointy ball.

F3 - Karlie McChesney

French curves are derived from the shaped segments of the Euler spiral. Designing with them creates fluid smooth curvature that is cut on the bias.

Numerics - Karlie McChesney

Numbers are a way of ordering our observations of the world we live in. They infiltrate every aspect of our lives. We are identified by our birth date, SIN, address and phone number. I AM intrigued by numbers, formulas and mathematics.
